Skull Models Learn how to protect your brain
The skull, or upper human skull, is a large, solid case, shockproof relative brain made of eight sections of bone that fuse after birth in a single unit, and these connections are called sutures. The structure itself is called the vault injury. A skull with no bones of the face is called the cranial vault. In about eight millimeters in thickness or one-quarter inch, the skull is sufficiently strong to keep the brain moving in all but the strongest impact.
In all, a human skull contains 22 bones forming the skull vault and other smaller cavities for the eyes, inner ear, nose and mouth. Add to this the 14 bones of the face, which determines the size, shape and configuration of the face and the human skull is a complex fusion of form following function, in which evolution has reduced the size of the jaw, or mandible, supraorbital process (the area of the eyebrows), the malar area and the thickness of the nasal bone. The skull also contains a number of areas such as processes (keep muscles and ligaments), holes (openings for the nerves and blood vessels) and of the sinuses, or spaces gaps that make light of the skull rather the human spine can support it.
